Study/Research Abroad
There are countless opportunities to conduct research, study at the graduate level, or engage in a fellowship abroad. Below are some reputable programs in the field. When doing your own research for other opportunities, a good place to start is the Consulate/Embassy website of the country you are interested in, where government-funded opportunities are often posted. Or, search the U.S.-based Institute for International Education for other funded opportunities to study/research abroad.
Fulbright U.S. Student Program Graduate Degree Grants
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program funds a wide variety of opportunities abroad, including awards for the standard benefits (monthly living stipend, health benefits and round-trip airfare) plus tuition coverage for select graduate degree programs in select countries.
Schwarzman Scholars is a scholarship created in response to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st Century. Students live and study together on the campus of Schwarzman College, a newly-built, state-of-the-art facility at Tsinghua University, where all classes are taught in English. Students pursue a Masters in Global Affairs, with concentrations in one of the disciplines: Public Policy, Economics and Business, and International Studies.
The Study in France Fellowship is a new financial need based grant for one academic year benefitting graduate and undergraduate students eager to benefit from a study abroad experience.
Boren Fellowships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
American India Foundation Fellowship
The William J. Clinton Fellowship for Service in India is an immersive, 10-month volunteer service program matching young professionals with development organizations. The Fellowship pairs a select number of highly skilled young professionals with leading NGOs and social enterprises in the fields of education, livelihoods, public health, and human rights. The ideal candidate must demonstrate a deep interest, passion, and commitment to social and economic development in India. AIF provides a roundtrip ticket from their point of origin to India, along with insurance coverage and a monthly living stipend.
There are various types of Japanese government-sponsored scholarships available under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship program, including graduate-level those for research students. Handout.
The DAAD USA scholarship is for students with a Bachelor’s from the USA who are now looking to do a graduate degree or research in Germany.
Chinese University Program is a full scholarship for designated Chinese universities and certain provincial education offices in specific provinces or autonomous regions to recruit outstanding international students for graduate studies in China.
Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University
The Taiwan Scholarship program is a joint initiative launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) and the National Science Council (NSC). The MOFA Taiwan Scholarship continues to encourage outstanding students to pursue academic degrees in Taiwan and to deepen their understanding of Taiwan's academic environment, thereby enhancing exchanges and building friendships between Taiwan and their home nations.
