There are many scholarships available for you if you choose to study abroad. Scholarships are available for UCEAP, UCSC Faculty-Led programs and more. The application process may be easier than you think, so please research the opportunities below and reach out to an advisor if you have questions.

UC Education Abroad Specific Scholarships [show]

Foreign Language Education Abroad Fund - All students who are studying in a non-English speaking country are encouraged to apply as it is not a requirement that you fully meet all of the above. The award is $726.00.

UCSC Frausto Scholarship for UCEAP - Open to UCSC students who have been selected or have officially applied to study abroad on Summer, Fall and Academic Year UCEAP program. Students who apply to this scholarship must be a Merrill College student, majoring in Community Studies, Education, Latino & Latina American Studies, Politics, or another Social Science field of study, and be a first-generation college student. The award is $750.00.

UC Education Abroad Program Scholarships

UCEAP offers over $1.5 million in scholarships for all categories of participants and for a comprehensive range of programs. Scholarships include:

Undergraduate annual research awards in each of three disciplinary areas: the humanities, social sciences, and sciences and engineering. Each award consists of a $1,000 stipend.

Scholarships for CIEE UCEAP Programs

Students who are participating in a CIEE program offered through UCEAP can apply to any CIEE scholarships, except the Minority Serving Institution Grant. Please see if your program is listed below:

Independent Scholarships [show]

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Awards scholarships of up to $5,000 to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding to participate in study or internship programs worldwide. An additional Critical Need Language Award of $3,000 is available to applicants who will be studying a critical need language abroad.

Boren Awards for International Study

Provides scholarships and fellowships for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

CIEE Scholarship

Three different available scholarships of varying amounts up to $2,000. Awards are made based on personal statements from student applicants and financial need, based on economic profile and estimated family contribution (EFC).

Delta Phi Alpha Scholarship

This one-time award is intended for Sophomore & Junior Delta Phi Alpha Members who are planning to study abroad on an accredited program in a German-speaking country during the spring/summer semester of the coming year.

Denmark Intern'l Studies Scholarship (DIS)

Three different scholarships offered, but only need one application form: DIS Scholarship, Study Abroad in Demark Scholarship, Diversity Scholarship.

Diversity Network Summer Scholarships

Offers summer scholarships in the amount of $500 for full-time students attending a Diversity Network member institution (includes UC Santa Cruz). Economically disadvantaged students, African-American/Black, Asian, Hispanic/Latinx, multiracial/ethnic or Indigenous/Native-American, students with disabilities and first-generation college undergraduate students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Dufrenoy Scholarships to study Sciences in France

Each year the Jean et Marie-Louise Dufrenoy scholarships enable two American students in the sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, geology, botany) or in technology (engineering, computer science, etc.) to pursue further studies in France during a full academic year within the student’s own field.

The amount of this scholarship is US $25,000 paid in two installments (half in July, half in December). The candidate’s knowledge of French must be at a level that enables studies to be undertaken at the university level.

DFreeman-ASIA

The Freeman-ASIA program is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures.

Foundation for Global Scholars

Awards scholarships to globally minded college students who want to make an impact. Must be a U.S. citizen and studying abroad for a minimum of 4 weeks/28 days. Scholarships are valued at $2,000.

Fund for Education Abroad Scholarships

Provides general scholarships of up to $10,000 each, and two dedicated scholarships: the Hillary Echo Douglas Memorial Scholarship, which awards up to $5,000 to a student demonstrating a love of Vietnam and other cultures, and the Rainbow Scholarship for LGBT students studying abroad. Scholarships are awarded with a preference to underrepresented students in study abroad programs, including minorities, science and technology majors and those choosing to study in non-traditional countries.

Go Overseas Study Abroad Scholarships

Offers a $500 scholarship to a student participating in a study abroad program. A scholarship is awarded each academic year based on the creativity and analytical thinking displayed through writing samples and/or video submissions.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Limited to Hispanic students attending U.S. universities. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Scholarship award amounts range from $500-$5,000. The average award amount is $2,500. These funds may be used to study abroad if the student remains enrolled in a U.S. university, the program occurs during the normal academic year, and the student will be receiving U.S. college credit towards his/her degree.

National Security Educational Scholarships (NSEP)

Scholarships to support U.S. undergraduate students participating in study abroad programs in world regions critical to US interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East), in exchange for a commitment to seek work in the federal government. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Deadline: February

National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) Scholarships

Various scholarships awarded to help students attain their goals and commend them for their outstanding academic excellence as well as their leadership and service achievements. Must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Must be an NSCS member to apply.

Phi Kappa Phi Scholarships

Seventy-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Applicants must attend an institution with an active Phi Kappa Phi chapter.

Pimsleur Approach Study Abroad Scholarship

Provides an award of $1,000 to support study abroad for U.S. college students.

Pimsleur Approach Study Abroad Scholarship

Created to increase educational opportunities to students who are from low-income, first-generation families, and/or those who are from ethnic backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in graduate education. Funded through the Department of Education.

Rainbow Sig

The Rainbow Scholarship awards deserving lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) students who aim to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs. Students are able to receive scholarship awards up to $10,000.

Region-Specific Scholarships [show]

Asia Pacific

Foundation for Asia Pacific Education

The Foundation awards scholarships to help enable students to obtain international experience in the Asia Pacific region. Students who are from underrepresented populations in international education are a priority. Award amounts vary however will range in increments of $500 to $1500.

Brazil

Brazilian Initiation Scholarship

The Brazilian Studies Association invites applications from graduate and undergraduate students for a one-time $1,500 travel scholarship to do exploratory research in Brazil. This scholarship targets aspiring Brazilianists with relatively little or no experience in Brazil.

Canada

Killam Fellowships Program

Provides an opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students from universities in the United States to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in Canada. The program offers a cash award of $10,000 ($5,000 per semester) as well as an allowance of $500 to offset health insurance costs. In addition, all Fellows are eligible to apply for a mobility grant in an amount not to exceed $800.

Germany

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarships

Highly qualified undergraduates are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research, and/or internships in Germany for four to ten months.

Israel

American Jewish League for Israel University Scholarship Fund

Assists students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents to study in Israel for the academic year. Scholarship awards are applied towards one year's tuition. Eligibility is limited to students who have been accepted for at least one year of academic study at select institutions in Israel.

Haas/Koshland Memorial Award

Provides awards up to $20,000 to support a year of personal development and/or study in Israel. The award is open to college students, from sophomore year through masters-level graduate school, who are from, or attend school, in the San Francisco Bay Area.

MASA Israel Grants & Scholarships

Offers universal grants and need-based scholarship awards for young adults to travel to Israel. Includes awards of $1,000 to study abroad participants and $3,000-$4,500 awards to eligible participants over the age of 21.

Japan

Bridging Scholarships

The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American students participating in study abroad programs in Japan. Recipients receive a stipend of $2,500 for a semester or $4,000 for academic year programs. Students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States before and during the time they are studying abroad.

Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarships

Several different kinds of scholarships are offered by the Japanese government for international students studying in Japan. Students holding Japanese passports are not eligible for these scholarships.

New Zealand

Generation Study Abroad Excellence and Travel Awards

Education New Zealand and New Zealand tertiary institutions offer $2,000 Travel Awards to help U.S. students fund their flight to New Zealand. Excellence Awards offer $500 for study at one of the eight New Zealand universities and $500 for study at participating institutes of technology and polytechnics.

Sweden

Jesse Lokrantz Scholarship

The American Women's Club in Stockholm offers scholarships to U.S. citizen students who are studying in Sweden for one year at an accredited Swedish university. Award amount varies year to year but is generally sufficient to cover a round-trip economy class ticket between the United States and Sweden.

Swedish Educational and Cultural Honorarium

The Standard Filter Corporation provides a $3,000 award to a student undertaking Swedish educational and cultural activities, which includes history, political science, sociology, language, literature, and the arts and sciences. Candidates must be a U.S. citizen and attending an accredited college or university in California.

Switzerland

Think Swiss Research Scholarship

Undergraduate and graduate students wanting to do research at a public Swiss university or research institute can apply a monthly scholarship of CHF 1,050 (approx. USD 1,100) for a period of 2 to 3 months. The scholarship is open to students of all fields.

United Kingdom

BUTEX Scholarships

Awards £500 scholarships to undergraduate students studying abroad for either a semester or for a whole academic year at a United Kingdom university which is BUTEX affiliated.

Lord Acton Memorial Scholarship

The Association of American Study Abroad Programmes United Kingdom offers a merit-based scholarship of £500 for a semester or term abroad or £1000 for full-year study in the United Kingdom. Must be on a program offered by AASAP/UK full or associate member.
