UCSC Field Study in India Summer 2017Taj Mahal

Gender, Technology & Globalization

July 29 - September 1, 2017

Information Session: January 26, 12:00 - 1:00PM, Classroom Unit Building, Room 201

One of the important developments in 21st Century higher education has been the internationalization of knowledge production. Various universities in the United States as well as in India, among other places, are taking advantage of this development by introducing curriculum in order to satisfy the demands of the new labor force in the globalized economy. In this course, UCSC students will travel to Odisha to study at Centurion University of Technology and Management (CUTM) in the Summer, 2017. Students will become familiar with the skill-based education pioneered by the Centurion University and get 5-7 units academic credit at UCSC.

Use a summer abroad in India to enrich your understanding of higher education, skill based training and employment opportunities among marginalized Indian students in a modern university setting as you join UC classmates in a project-based, team-learning environment. Combining lectures, interactive activities, small group discussions, and service learning projects in local rural villages and the university campus, you will study the impact of globalization to understand and think critically about the nature of the state, multinational corporations and other funding agencies, and their roles in promoting development projects and their intended and unintended effects.

You will attend classes with Centurion University students and spend a considerable amount of time learning about the skill based education model to provide jobs to students coming from rural and tribal areas. Learn more about Centurion University and the village project HERE.

You will stay at Centurion University focused on skill training, located in Odisha, India. You will spend time at two different campuses in urban and rural Odisha. The program includes visits to a number of tourist attractions and excursions to places of interest. You will be  engaged in various educational and cultural activities in each region. Coursework and field study are taught and supervised by UCSC and Centurion faculty and staff.
