How to Obtain General Education (GE) Credit for Courses Taken on UCEAP

Before departure

Prior to departure, request pre-approval for courses to count as GE credit by completing a proposed program evaluation through the Office of Admissions. Allow up to 6 weeks for your request to be reviewed – start early! If your academic plan relies on satisfying specific GEs while abroad, it is strongly recommended you request pre-approval rather than assume your UCEAP courses will count toward your GEs. The DC requirement must be taken at UCSC.

The UCSC Office of Admissions has final approval over which, if any, courses may be used to satisfy GE requirements.

While Abroad

Make sure you save all of your syllabi and coursework from abroad. If you are registering for courses after departure, see the above paragraph regarding course registration.

Upon Return

Upon return, grades can take up to four months to transfer back. You will see the courses listed on your UC Santa Cruz transcript and your corresponding UC grades at that time. You can submit a review of transfer credit online to request your pre-approved GE be applied to your UCEAP course. UCSC Study Abroad offers the following advice on what information you will need to bring to your departmental advisor to assist with your petition:

  • Course syllabus (translated if necessary)
  • Course textbook name or reading list (translated if necessary)
  • Written assignments for the class (translated if necessary)
  • Tests and quizzes (translated if necessary)
