Program Overview:

Study abroad in the vibrant city of Barcelona, Spain, at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), an institution well known for its excellence in research and teaching. This program offers students a unique opportunity to enroll in courses at UAB that fulfill Economics major requirements. Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and is renowned for its architecture, art, and food.

Language of Instruction: English, Spanish, and/or Catalan

Eligibility Requirements

This program is open to students who meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Economics major
  • Junior or Senior class standing by the time of departure
  • 3.00 cumulative UCSC GPA or above
  • Good academic and disciplinary standing
  • UCSC student, 18 years of age or older at the time of departure


Economics courses taught in English at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) have been pre-approved for certain major requirements by the UC Santa Cruz Economics department. Completed courses will appear on your transcript as transfer credit. Placement in specific courses abroad is not guaranteed as course offerings at UAB vary by semester and enrollment is subject to both course availability and completion of any required prerequisites. You have the option to take only one course outside the Economics department. Language courses are available. Students with may enroll in Economics courses taught in Spanish if they have completed at least 2 years of university-level Spanish language study with a minimum language GPA of 2.85.

UC Santa Cruz Exchange Programs have limited space. Applications are processed and selected on rolling admission and first come first serve basis. Students are encouraged to apply early.

  1. Sign into SlugsAbroad with your CruzID to complete your Study Abroad Profile.
  2. Select your program to start the application process.
  3. Complete and submit the application. Make sure you have uploaded all required documents.
  4. Wait for notification about your selection status. You will be notified within three weeks of application submission. If selected, you will be prompted to begin completing pre-departure requirements, including health clearance and a host university application.
