Tonia Prencipe

Tonia Prencipe
prencipe@ucsc.edu

A native of Italy, I graduated from the University of Bari, Italy, with a "Laurea" in Foreign Languages and Literature, majoring in English. I taught for several years at UC Davis and then moved to UC Santa Cruz, where I have been teaching Italian for over two decades.

While at UC Davis, I directed a summer language program in Italy that spanned three years at the Cristoforo Colombo Institute in Viareggio, Tuscany, and was affiliated with the University of Pisa. I decided to teach a UC Santa Cruz intensive Italian language program abroad because my academic career and personal journey have been deeply shaped by my own study abroad experiences. As a college student, I pursued academic research in England during summer breaks.

From my own experience, I recognize that studying the Italian language and culture immersed in the culturally vibrant town of Sorrento will spark life-lasting academic and personal enrichment. Through hands-on cultural activities in Sorrento and excursions to other Italian sites such as Pompeii and Capri, students will not only acquire and improve their linguistic fluency, but also become citizens of the world, capable of better understanding their own identity in an international and universal perspective.

A Message to Students and Loved Ones

Dear Students,

Italy is one of the best countries for gaining a study abroad experience. It offers so much. From my own experience, I recognize that teaching the Italian language and culture immersed in the culturally rich town of Sorrento, will spark a life lasting academic and personal enrichment. Through hands-on cultural activities in Sorrento and excursions to other Italian sites like the Limoncello and mozzarella factories, you will not only acquire or improve your linguistic fluency, but also, become citizens of the world, capable of better understanding your own identity in an international and universal perspective.
