Program Overview

This program will provide an overview of past, present, and future space missions, with an emphasis on key players in the US (NASA), Europe (ESA), and China (CNSA). The program, with lectures from experts in the field, including from members of the Laboratory for Space Research at The University of Hong Kong, will include excursions to nearby Guangzhou, Zhuhai, and Macau, where we will visit the Center for Astrophysics of Guangzhou University (GU), the Institute of Astronomy and Space Science at Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU), and the Space Science Institute/Lunar and Planetary Science Laboratory at the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST).

China, with its rapidly growing economy, has made enormous investments in recent years in its space program. The number of new space missions being developed is truly staggering. The opportunities for future collaboration are enormous, and the desire for such collaborations is also evident. The European Space Agency (ESA) and China, for example, are already planning extensive collaborations. At the University of Hong Kong, faculty are involved in some of the latest (and future) Chinese missions, and this joint program will provide the opportunity for UCSC students to learn first-hand about many of these projects that are not well publicized in the US.

This program is limited capacity.
